Sense of Community:  A feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members’ needs will be met through their commitment to be together.  (McMillan & Chavis, 1986 / Wikipedia)

Tonight we will celebrate ILCA’s amazing 50th anniversary.  We will hear from leaders from the last five decades in the landscape and green industry, and I know we will be inspired.  The wisdom that will be contained in one banquet hall this evening, about what it takes to succeed in our industry, will be immeasurable.  If you’re there you’ll have had the chance to tap into this fantastic brain trust.  Maybe you’ll gain the idea or strategy which will change your business – for the better.  Maybe you will share time with friends and be restored.  Maybe you’ll find a fruitful lead.  Maybe you will be filled with hope and courage for 2010.

Communities do not exist without their members.  What that community is, can be defined by the actions and results of the members of the community.  Right now, when we all have to work harder to do better work, provide better services and better products to stay competitive, we all have to connect a little more, instead of a little less, in order to stay in the game.  And to stay in that game, we must certainly help each other to meet each others’ needs.

As many of us confront the greatest business obstacles in the last half century, how can we afford to not be formal members of our industry community and ILCA?  Whether it is hard facts, information, sales, technical skills or knowledge which puts your business ahead of the competition, or whether it is the softer benefits of being a part of the ILCA community such as camaraderie or having someone to call when you need a favor, these are times which demand our participation and action in ILCA.  We simply cannot survive without our green community and without each other.  Make part of your success scenario in the next year, sharing your time and talents with your ILCA community.  The rewards will be immense.
