Saving The World!

My Superhero!

By Christa Orum-Keller

“There is no way to peace — peace is the way.  The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”    -Mahatma Ghandi

My son recently started Taekwondo.  He is six and an absolute bundle of energy.  He has two friends from kindergarten who have been practicing over the last year, and he had no doubt heard stories and seen some of their moves on the playground which caught his interest.  In fact, in his assessment, when the Master asked him why he wanted to join, my son replied, “Because I want to learn the cool moves.”  But when you’re six, you don’t think too long about the commitment or consequences of what you’re getting yourself into.  An inspiration for those of us a tad older, who might tend to hesitate or over-think our decisions from time to time.

Quickly it became apparent that this was not just a sport, learning to fight or a matter of ‘cool moves’.  There was a lot more to the story.  A way of life, tools for conflict resolution, respect for one’s parents, friends and all people, confidence building, becoming a champion of justice and freedom, building a better and more peaceful world.  Uh, yes, my six year old found himself suddenly committed to something he had not exactly bargained for…

Lesson one.  When my son was asked if he could kick 6’ into the air he answered no; physically at that moment he knew he could not.  The Master said, “We don’t say no, we say, ‘I will try my best sir’.  When you are an adult, you will be able to kick even higher than this.”

We can never underestimate what we can do or what we have the possibility of doing and all too often we do just that – completely underestimate our abilities and influence.  How often does “I can’t” creep into our language or mind?  Anything we do as a collective, a company, a trade association, or as the human race, begins with the individual and small actions of that which each of us commits to doing.

Can we reduce plastic waste and recycle more significantly?  Can we solve the immigration reform impasse?  Can we cause people to do more landscaping and plant more plants?  Can we create world peace?  Can we save the planet?
